Mohanlal, who entered films as an actor through Manjil Virinja Pookal directed by Fazil, has also donned the role of producer and playback singer in the past. But this time, he treads the unfamiliar path of storywriting. The story of Swapnamalika has been written by Mohanlal and he plays the lead opposite Israeli actress Eleana.
The story of the movie revolves around Dr. Raman Nair, who returns from the US to perform the last rites of his father. On the way to Varanasi, he meets a girl, Radha Karmel, who also wants to perform the last rites of her husband. Inspired by Ileana, Dr. Raman undertakes a journey to Kerala to find his roots.
It says that Mohanlal wanted to do direction too, but later he requested K.B. Devarajan to take over the direction.
